Cabochons - these are finished and polished samples of various minerals, in shapes like ovals, raindrops / tears, shields, 'ox horns', and others. The word "cabochon" comes from the Middle French word caboche (meaning "head"), is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. Cutting "en cabochon" is usually applied to opaque gems, while faceting is usually applied to transparent stones (gems).
